The Faculty of Medicine is a division or department within a university that focuses on education and research related to medicine and healthcare. It typically includes various schools or departments specializing in different aspects of medical education and practice.
The Faculty of Medicine is one of the founding faculties of UoC. The MBBS programme is a 5-year, fully accredited programme recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council, culminating in the award of the Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. The programme started with 71 registered medical students in December 2005 and has since successfully produced eight batches of medical graduates who are currently serving all over Malaysia.
In line with the University motto of “Nurturing the Passion to Care”, the teaching and learning activities embrace and integrate the three domains of learning; cognitive, affective and psychomotor. The integration of these essential domains in the curriculum – along with Godliness – in the life of students helps shape a balanced education system in producing healthcare professionals who are intellectually, emotionally and spiritually balanced. This is achieved through the revolutionised teaching and learning activities of student-centred outcome-based education. Technology is incorporated to enhance participative learning environments that actively engage the current Y and Z generation in the acquisition of new knowledge.
The Faculty of Medicine also offers postgraduate programmes to encourage lifelong learning opportunities. Both Masters in Medical Sciences (MMedSc) (By Research) and PhD in Medical Sciences (PhDMedSc) (By Research) programmes are offered in collaboration with the Centre for Graduate Studies. Masters in Public Health, Masters in Healthcare Management, and short courses in healthcare-related subjects will also be offered In the near future, in collaboration with other reputable tertiary institutions.

Professor Dr Premnath Nagalingam is an experienced surgeon with a distinguished career spanning over two decades. He holds an MBBS from the University of Mysore, Karnataka, India, and Fellowships from both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a life member of the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia, and serves on the International Editorial Advisory Board of The Surgeon, the journal of both Royal Colleges.
Throughout his career, Prof Dr Prem has held significant roles within the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, for nearly two decades, including nearly four years with the Armed Forces. He spent the last eight years of his tenure as a Consultant General & Thoracic Surgeon. In 2007, he joined RCSI & UCD Malaysia (formerly Penang Medical College) as an Associate Professor in Surgery, becoming a full Professor in 2012, and was appointed Dean in 2016. He continues to contribute to postgraduate surgical education, overseeing examinations and workshops for RCSI in Malaysia.
Prof Dr Prem is also involved in a number of prestigious academic and professional roles. He is the Regional Representative for the College of Surgeons of Malaysia, the Thoracic Surgery Training Supervisor for the Ministry of Health, and the Chairman of the Thoracic Subspecialty Accreditation Committee for the National Specialist Register. Additionally, he serves on various advisory boards, including the International Advisory Board for The Surgeon, and the Regional Advisory Board for the Manipal Alumni Science & Health (MASH) Journal.
He is an invited panel member for the Permanent Committee for Academic Promotions at King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia, and has reviewed for several notable medical journals, including the Saudi Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Malaysian Family Physician Journal, and Malaysian Medical Journal. His leadership and dedication to the field of surgery and medical education continue to shape the future of healthcare in Malaysia and beyond.
