The rapidly expanding Halal industry is relevant in catering to an ever-growing consumer base. Traditionally identified with the food sector, the Halal industry has grown to cover other industrial segments such as commerce, transport, pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals among others. No longer viewed as solely a religious obligation, the Halal standards and principles have grown favourable worldwide due to its quality assurance and its compulsion for Toyyiban that confers the principle of hygiene, nutritive and ethical consumerism that benefit every individual equally regardless of religion.
Established on 20 July 2016, the UoC Halal Science Center is formed primarily to raise awareness of and develop specialised services, especially in the field of Halal pharmaceuticals and Halal cosmeceuticals. The Halal Science Centre offers a variety of services such as research and development on the alternatives of gelatine and magnesium stearate in pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturing, consultancy for small and medium enterprises applying for halal certification, substance analysis as well as offering training and consultancy for individuals and institutions embarking in the field of halal science.
To date, the Centre has developed mutually beneficial collaborations between various industrial key players such as Standards Malaysia, Halal International Selangor, Halal Development Corporation, Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) and CCM Pharmaceuticals.

To raise awareness on halal pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals by provision of training, consultancy, top quality research, halal testing and subsequent services to the Asia-Pacific, Middle East regions and globally.
Halal Testing & Analytical Services
The HSC’s Testing & Analytical Lab are able to provide analytical testing services that ensure compliance with MS2424: Halal Pharmaceuticals and other Halal Standards used in Malaysia and the ASEAN region. The laboratory is able to provide services to examine for gelatine, fatty acid profile, etc. The laboratory is currently equipped with PCR, HPLC and GCMS services.
Training & Consultancy
The HSC Training and Consultation Unit provides training to establish expertise and competency in Halal Pharmaceuticals & Halal Cosmeceuticals. Our training modules are tailor-made for a wide variety of audiences in the pharmaceutical industry. We also provide technical assistance and consultancy to the industry on Halal built-in processes, the establishment of the Halal Assurance System, Sertu for Pharmaceuticals, Halal critical areas for pharmaceutical manufacturing and Halal Executive Training. HSC also works jointly with Halal Selangor International and JAKIM in providing training on Halal GMP, Halal Awareness and Halal Certification Requirements, Halal Auditing as well as Halal Assurance Systems.
Halal Executive Training Program
UoC Halal Sciences Centre provide training and certification for Halal Executives through its Halal Executive Training Course.
Objective
To produce competent individuals equipped with the knowledge to assist a Halal product manufacturer on the methods and procedures that it would need to implement using best practices to receive Halal Certification.
To meet the Halal Toyyiban standards and compliance employing practical methods, techniques, procedures, technology and tools, to comply with the Malaysian Halal Management Systems (MHMS) 2000.
Halal Awareness & Counselling
A core function of the UoC Halal Science Centre includes raising awareness of halal pharmaceuticals and halal cosmeceuticals. Activities include awareness campaigns, improvement of availability of information pertaining to the halal status of medications, and patient and provider education on the halal formulary and halal product substitutions among others. A database of halal medication listings; is urgently needed for Malaysia and the neighbouring region; a future aim of Halal Science Centre will serve to assure and comfort Muslims and non-Muslims alike seeking Halalan Toyyiban which guarantees safety, hygiene, nutritive and ethical consumerism that benefit every individual equally.
Marketing & Networking
Marketing and networking services provide networking opportunities with a range of stakeholders that include customers and partner organisations, for example, JAKIM, Halal International Selangor (HIS), Jabatan Standard Malaysia and universities. Networking activities also aim at spreading good practices by promoting common standards and guidelines.
As a pioneer in the Halal industry, Malaysia has been able to develop an impressive Halal ecosystem which is further strengthened by the newly developed Halal Industrial Master Plan (HIMP 2030). In 2018, Malaysia’s Halal Market amounted to USD 68.4 billion which cosmeceuticals & pharmaceuticals contributing to USD 7.0 billion and 3.4 billion respectively. A strategic thrust that has been set for strengthening Malaysia’s position as the global halal hub is enhancing R&D in product and process developments and leveraging upon the latest technological developments to expand the product range.
In support of the national agenda, the Halal Science Centre has actively promoted halal pharmaceutical research since 2014 including ongoing pharmaceutical research to discover an alternative to existing lubricants and stabilizers in the market.
