Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, affecting millions of people each year. Yet many of these conditions are preventable through informed lifestyle choices, early intervention and greater public awareness. Recognising this need, medical students at the University of Cyberjaya (UoC) are taking an active role in promoting heart health through creative public‑engagement initiatives.

As part of the Cardiovascular System Module (MED 2014), second‑year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students produced a series of educational videos aimed at translating complex cardiovascular concepts into clear and practical messages for the public. Developed under the theme “Lifestyle and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease,” the project seeks to encourage Malaysians to adopt heart‑healthy habits and pursue timely preventive care.

Year Two MBBS Students Bring Medical Knowledge to the Community

Speaking on behalf of her group, Nurul Huda Ismail highlighted the importance of appropriate exercise guidance for individuals living with cardiovascular conditions.

“The key message we wanted our audience to take away is the importance and benefits of exercise modifications for cardiovascular patients. Exercising correctly — safely and intelligently — is essential, especially for those with fragile hearts.”

She added that the collaborative nature of the assignment strengthened important professional skills among the students.

“Everyone gets to share their ideas, and deciding on the outcome together is meaningful. As future doctors, discussions and teamwork are crucial for achieving the best patient outcomes.”

Another student, Srilekha A/P Jaikumar, explained that their video addressed common myths surrounding cardiovascular medications — an issue with significant real‑world implications for Malaysian communities.

“We are happy to highlight the importance of distinguishing myths from facts about cardiovascular medications. With cardiovascular disease being a major health concern in Malaysia, we wanted people to seek proper medical advice rather than stopping or avoiding medication due to misconceptions.”

She also emphasised the importance of communicating health information in a respectful and relatable manner.

“We wanted our content to reach a wide audience — from young adults to the elderly — without appearing dismissive of their beliefs. Presenting health myths in a relatable and respectful manner was essential.”

Reflecting on the experience, she noted that the project helped students better understand patient behaviour.

“This project helped us understand why some patients hesitate to follow medical advice. It showed us how crucial clear communication is, and how creative platforms like short videos can raise awareness and support healthier decision‑making.”

Meanwhile, Muhammad Aiman bin Amran highlighted how the assignment deepened his team’s appreciation for early detection and preventive care.

“I learnt that the cardiovascular system is one of the most vital systems in the body, connecting the heart to all organs. Because we cannot directly see the condition of our internal organs, regular check‑ups are essential — once symptoms appear, it may be too late.”

He also reflected on the creative and collaborative aspects of producing the video.

“We enjoyed the shooting session the most. The combination of ideas from all 12 group members made the video enjoyable and engaging. The moment when the guard unexpectedly appeared in our video made the ending feel natural, casual and reflective of a real‑life situation.”

Despite the creative process, the students remained focused on delivering clear and impactful messages.

“The most challenging part was ensuring the key points were delivered clearly and understandably. Sometimes, even a simple scene can carry many layers of meaning.”

Offering a message to the public, he concluded:

“I hope this video increases awareness about the importance of cardiovascular health. We must care for our bodies from the inside out. Health and life are priceless — do your check‑ups now.”

Celebrating Creativity and Advocacy

Students from Batch 2023 and Batch 2024 participated in the initiative. Following evaluation, several videos were selected for publication in recognition of their clarity, creativity and educational value. All participating groups demonstrated commendable effort, producing high‑quality work that highlighted lifestyle changes, preventive strategies and practical tips for maintaining heart health.

Developing Future Changemakers Who Engage the Public

Course Coordinator for the Cardiovascular System Module (MED 2014), Dr Maisarah Mohamad, commended the students for their creativity and commitment to public‑health education.

“Our aim is to develop future doctors who can educate, inspire and engage the community. These videos demonstrate that our students are already stepping confidently into that role. I strongly encourage everyone to watch them — they offer practical, evidence‑based guidance that can benefit individuals, families and the wider community.”
