It was a meaningful day of awareness, education, and community spirit as the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Cyberjaya hosted Ribbon Rave: A Wave of Hope, a cancer awareness programme held in conjunction with World Head and Neck Cancer Day. The event brought together healthcare professionals, advocacy organisations, students, and staff with the shared goal of promoting early detection, education, and proactive health practices.

The day began with welcoming remarks from Professor Dr. David Whitford, Vice Chancellor, who highlighted the importance of health awareness campaigns in shaping responsible, informed individuals both within the university and in the wider community.

A series of insightful health talks followed, featuring speakers from leading cancer advocacy organisations. Ms. Sumitra Selvaraj of the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia shared valuable knowledge on breast cancer awareness, the significance of early screening, and how empowering conversations can save lives. Dr. Teo Ik Hui from University Malaya Medical Centre and ROSE Foundation Malaysia addressed cervical cancer prevention, highlighting the availability of HPV self-sampling as a powerful and accessible method for early detection. Mr. Lee Kian Chin from the Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Society Malaysia (CORUM) delivered an eye-opening session on colorectal cancer awareness, with a focus on survivorship, prevention, and the importance of regular screening through tools such as the iFOBT.

Enhancing the experience further was the MAKNA Exhibition Truck, which brought cancer education to life through immersive Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology. This interactive approach engaged students in a new way, making complex medical concepts more accessible and memorable. Throughout the day, attendees also visited awareness booths operated by organisations such as ROSE Foundation, MAKNA, CORUM, and BCWA, where they participated in screenings, educational demonstrations, and health consultations.

“As healthcare educators, we believe it is our responsibility to not only teach clinical knowledge but to instill compassion, awareness, and community engagement in our students. Ribbon Rave is a reflection of that belief — where education meets purpose,” said a representative from the Faculty of Nursing, Dr. Manjit Kaur Khaira, Acting Head of Faculty of Nursing.

The event was not only informative but also uplifting. Students and staff came together to celebrate the spirit of solidarity through singing performances, interactive games, and a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony that marked a shared commitment to raising cancer awareness. These elements added warmth and energy to the day, reminding all in attendance that health education can be both meaningful and engaging.

The Faculty of Nursing extends its heartfelt thanks to all the partners, speakers, volunteers, and attendees who contributed to the success of Ribbon Rave: A Wave of Hope. The event reaffirmed UoC’s commitment to building a healthier, more informed community through proactive initiatives that combine learning with action, empathy with awareness, and knowledge with change.
