CyberjayaUC hosts over 200 participants at the 1st International Paramedic Symposium (Southern Zone) 2018.
Cyberjaya, 23rd January 2018 – The 1st ever International Paramedic Symposium (Southern Zone) in support of the National Association of Paramedics Malaysia that focused on “Empowering Paramedics Globally” was successfully hosted by Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CyberjayaUC) in collaboration with its Australian partner, Paramedical Services Pty Ltd from New South Wales.
The symposium featured several local and international industry leaders from United Kingdom, Australia and Singapore who shared their experiences, thoughts and new insights on paramedic practices around the world. The symposium aimed at helping the National Association of Paramedics towards elevating industry practices in Malaysia as paramedics play a vital role in emergency cases from the scene to the hospital to be treated by doctors and other medical professionals.
As part of the symposium, a Memorandum of Agreement was also inked with Paramedical Sciences Pty Ltd as a joint development with Malaysia for a first-of-its-kind, dual award Diploma for Paramedics. This programme provided students with a Malaysian Qualifications Agency’s fully accredited diploma and a nationally recognised Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA)’s approved vocational diploma. Having been locally established in Malaysia, Paramedical Services Australia was represented by Palladium Enterprise Sdn Bhd. who played an exceptionally vital role in ensuring successful collaboration with CyberjayaUC. The collaboration reflected efforts to upscale and strengthen the Paramedical industry in producing graduates that met global standards and practices.
International Paramedic Symposium (Southern Zone) 2018 was officiated by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abdul Razak, President of Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences on 23rd January 2018 at Cyberjaya Campus with over 200 participants who witnessed the officiating ceremony.
Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abdul Razak, President of Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences said, “As part of the integrated healthcare spectrum, Paramedics must be well equipped and prepared at all times to handle emergency situations professionally. This symposium is a great platform to better improve healthcare systems in providing top niche, world-class medical treatment”.
Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CyberjayaUC) has been running the Paramedical Sciences diploma programme for the past ten years and this new endeavour marked another significant beginning for the future of Paramedical industry in Malaysia.
Among the highlights at the Paramedical Science symposium were:
Dr Peter Mangles, Director of Paramedical Services Australia addressed issues relating to International Paramedic, indicating the “Job and Responsibility of Paramedic in Health Care Setting”. He stressed on the importance of managing paramedic responsibilities effectively to ensure patients received the required treatment and temporary relief before obtaining treatment from specialized doctors. Dr Peter Mangles has had the opportunity to work in numerous countries and regions (Australia, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Singapore, West Papua and Papua New Guinea) as a senior healthcare executive. Dr Mangles holds registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and is also a registered nurse and a qualified Intensive Care Paramedic. Dr Mangles holds advanced qualifications in trauma and aviation medicine and has a passion for prehospital emergency care. Dr Mangles has operated ambulance and retrieval services in Australia and Indonesia and was responsible for the delivery of primary occupational health and emergency prehospital care for over 50 off shore drilling assets in the North Sea (UK). Dr Mangles is a member of the Board for Paramedics Australasia (NSW Chapter) and holds an adjunct appointment with the Charles Sturt University.
Mr Garry Mikhail, Managing Director of Paramedical Services Australia spoke based on the International Paramedic context pertaining to “Pre-Hospital Care Among Paramedic”. He mentioned the significance of a Paramedic in providing effective pre-hospital care and the adequacy of knowledge required for a paramedic to provide the best care and treatment for suffering patients. Mr. Garry is a graduate from the Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Health Science (Pre-Hospital) and has a keen interest in the pre-hospital care and aeromedical retrieval which was consolidated over 40 years in Pre-Hospital Healthcare, with the Royal Australian Navy and the NSW Ambulance Service, as an Intensive Care SCAT Paramedic. Mr. Garry is currently a lecturer for the Bachelor of Health Science (Pre-Hospital Care), and Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) at Charles Sturt University and the Australian Catholic University.
In addition to the keynotes above, attendees also heard from and participated in sessions led by more renown experts – the best and brightest in areas related to demand and needs of the society in health care setting, definition of paramedic job and description skills, emergency response of ambulance (medical & trauma), research presentations and much more. Among them were Dr Sarah Sh Abd Karim (Emergency Physician/Pre Health Care, Malaysia), Dr Alias Bin Mahmod (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Mr. Kulendran Siva Singam (Emergency Ambulance Paramedic Singapore), Mr. Azly Laif (Principal Advisor Operational Health Malaysia), Mr Abd Karim Bin Mustafa (Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Mr Kharul Hasana Jusoh (President Dressar Malacca Fc, Chairman Bachelor of Paramedical Sciences 6th Batch of Asia Metropolitan University & 2nd Batch Ministry Of Health) and Dr Ahmad Fairus Bin Mohammed (Deputy Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences CyberjayaUC).
