On Monday, 26 May 2025, the University of Cyberjaya (UoC) hosted a vibrant and spirited celebration of global culture during its highly anticipated event, DiverCity: One World, Many Voices. Held on the campus grounds and organised with a focus on cultural inclusivity, the event brought together students representing over ten countries in a colourful showcase of tradition, heritage, and unity.
The day began with a welcome address from the Vice Chancellor, Dr. David Whitford, who highlighted the significance of cross-cultural understanding in today’s interconnected world. His speech set the stage for a day of learning and celebration. Following Dr. Whitford's address, the Student Council President took the stage to reflect on the collective efforts of the student body in making DiverCity a reality. This event not only celebrated individual identity but also the strength of unity.
The opening segment was marked by the grand flag parade, where student representatives from each participating country proudly marched forward, displaying their national flags. This powerful visual representation of global camaraderie set the tone for an unforgettable day.
In an exciting addition, each country featured its booth, meticulously decorated and filled with cultural displays. Students from India, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Syria, Maldives, Malaysia, Egypt, and Algeria opened booths to showcase their unique traditions. The booths were brimming with vibrant traditional costumes, tantalizing native foods, handcrafted giveaways, and the lively rhythms of authentic music. The campus was transformed into a miniature global village, with students and visitors moving from booth to booth, sampling dishes, learning traditional dances, and engaging in conversations transcending borders and language.
The celebration continued with an array of cultural performances from each participating nation. These performances ranged from traditional dances to contemporary musical showcases, offering dynamic insights into the heart and soul of each culture. The performances culminated in a spectacular fashion show, where students confidently strutted across the stage in garments representing their countries' historical and modern styles.
As the event drew close, attendees were invited to vote for the "Best Booth" and "Best Performance." This sparked friendly competition and enthusiasm, with cheers ringing when the winners were announced. Bangladesh took first place for the Best Booth, followed by Sudan in second place. In the performance category, Sudan captivated the audience with an energetic and soulful act, securing first place. Zimbabwe and the Maldives rounded out the top three, taking second and third places, respectively.
DiverCity 2025 was more than just a cultural event; it was a heartfelt reminder of the beauty of diversity and the strength that emerges when people from different backgrounds come together. The event allowed students to represent their heritage proudly and created an inclusive space for learning, connection, and celebration.
DiverCity stood as a living testament to the power of multicultural unity in a world that often emphasises division. Through food, art, music, and friendship, the University of Cyberjaya once again proved that when many voices come together, they create harmony far beyond the campus walls.
