The event aimed to advocate the role of pharmacists in improving healthcare of the public and promote the benefits of competitive sports.
The WPD Games 2017 was launched on 23rd September 2017 in conjunction with the celebration of World Pharmacists Day. The event was organized by the Malaysian Community Pharmacy Guild (MCPG), the Pharmaceutical Services Division and the Ministry of Health (MOH).
CUCMS’ team was led by Mr. Masro Mohamad, the Advisor of Sports & Recreation Bureau for CUPSS (CUCMS Pharmacy Student Society) along with participation from lecturers, staff and students of the faculty. The event was the first-ever National Pharmacy Games for all pharmacists and pharmacy students in Malaysia.
The WPD Games 2017 was designed for interstate and institution competition. All pharmacists and pharmacy students participated in the team and individual sports such as bowling, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, netball, football and athletics.
An exclusive 4X100m President’s Challenge Run was the event’s highlight. The challenge required four people in a team and CUCMS’ representatives included Dr, Yaman Walid Kassab, Associate Professor Dr. Zainol Akbar Zainal, Mr. Masro Mohamad and Dr. Mohammad Fauzi Bostanudin. The team victoriously won a Gold medal for this challenge.
Along with that, other CUCMS teams also won overall 3 Gold medals for Volleyball (Female category), Netball and Tenpin Bowling (Mixed Group Category) and 1 Silver medal for the 400m track event (Male Category).
Winners of each challenge were:
Volleyball (Female category)
Netball
Tenpin Bowling (Mixed Group Category)
400m track event (Male Category)
The state of Selangor ranked 2nd place overall after Kelantan and CUCMS was one of the major medal contributors to the state.
Among the other Pharmacy organizations and institutions that participated were the Malaysian Pharmacy Society (MPS), International Medical University (IMU), Management & Science University (MSU) and Pharmaceutical Association of Malaysia (PhAMA).
Indeed, it was an inspiring victory for CUCMS as most of the students had done last-minute preparations for this event having caught up with the mid-semester examination. Next year, CUCMS aims to send a larger number of students to compete in the WPD Games.
