In a strategic move to address Malaysia’s growing demand for qualified nurses and future-proof its healthcare workforce, Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG), the University of Cyberjaya (UoC), and Cyberjaya College Kota Kinabalu (CCKK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to launch the SunMed Scholarship Programme for Diploma in Nursing Students. The MoU signifies a strong commitment to nurturing healthcare talent, with each student receiving sponsorship valued at over RM100,000.

This collaboration unites SHG’s industry expertise, UoC’s academic leadership, and CCKK’s regional reach to provide a comprehensive, future-ready educational pathway. The partnership aims to play a role in easing the national shortage of nurses while equipping graduates with the resilience, adaptability, and practical skills needed to thrive in dynamic healthcare settings. UoC’s curriculum will emphasise both academic excellence and real-world exposure to ensure graduates are job-ready upon completion.

For students in Sabah, the partnership offers access to quality nursing education through Cyberjaya College Kota Kinabalu. CCKK plays a vital role in inspiring and preparing local youth to pursue meaningful careers in healthcare, thereby contributing to talent development in East Malaysia. The collaboration enhances CCKK’s capacity to serve as a bridge between education and employment, expanding opportunities for underserved communities.

“This partnership shows the great results possible when universities and industry work together with a common goal. At the University of Cyberjaya, we’re proud to lead the way in nursing education by preparing students to thrive in today’s fast-changing healthcare world. The SunMed Scholarship Programme shows our strong commitment to national needs — tackling staff shortages, widening access to education, and ensuring our graduates are ready to deliver excellent care. By working with Sunway Medical Centre and Cyberjaya College Kota Kinabalu, we’re creating more opportunities for future nurses, especially in Sabah, and building a stronger, more inclusive healthcare system.” said Professor Dr. David Whitford, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cyberjaya.

The SunMed Scholarship Programme, one of the most competitive scholarship programmes for nursing education in Malaysia, would cover full tuition fees of a 3-year Diploma in Nursing, hostel accommodation, transportation, book allowance, medical check-ups, academic bonus, and in-patient and outpatient treatment coverage, among others.

Upon graduation, students will be placed in any one of SHG’s hospitals, including the flagship quaternary Sunway Medical Centre Sunway City that has been ranked the top hospital in Malaysia and in the top 250 hospitals globally by Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2025 ranking. Students will also have the opportunity to train alongside leading specialists and have exposure to advanced medical technologies, benefitting from SHG’s international collaborations such as with the University of Cambridge, Royal Papworth Hospital, and the Royal College of Physicians.

“At Sunway Healthcare Group, we believe that investing in nursing education is investing in the future of healthcare. This partnership reflects our deep commitment to building a resilient, high-quality workforce that can meet the evolving needs of our nation and region. Together with UoC and CCKK, we’re proud to support and empower the next generation of nurses,” said Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group.

The MoU signing ceremony was held at the University of Cyberjaya’s Welcome Centre and officiated by Professor Dr. David Whitford, Vice Chancellor of UoC; Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group; and (Dr.) Awang Faisal Assyiffa bin Ag. Rahim, Chief Executive of CCKK. This tripartite partnership marks a milestone in collaborative healthcare education and reinforces a shared vision: to cultivate a skilled, resilient, and compassionate nursing workforce for Malaysia’s future.
