The University of Cyberjaya (UoC) has been honoured with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Appreciation Award in the Institute of Higher Learning category at the inaugural Anugerah SMART Mampan@Sepang 2024. The award ceremony, held on 6 December 2024 and hosted by the Sepang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Sepang), recognised UoC’s outstanding contributions to advancing the SDGs at the local level.

The awards were organised under the theme “Sepang Localising SDG” and aimed to acknowledge exemplary efforts by communities, government agencies, private organisations, NGOs, schools, and higher education institutions in promoting and implementing sustainable development initiatives. The award criteria emphasised:

  • Implementation of the 5 SDG Champion goals in Sepang or other relevant SDGs.
  • Collaborative partnerships and agency involvement in executing SDG initiatives in Sepang.
  • Measuring the solutions and impacts of activities/programmes to achieve sustainable development goals in Sepang.
  • Developing long-term strategies and innovative methods to integrate and maintain Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) practices.

UoC demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability through impactful programmes and initiatives for a sustainable Sepang. One highlight was the UoC’s SDG Week 2024, held from 25 to 30 November 2024, which promoted sustainability and provided students with opportunities to deepen their understanding and actively engage in initiatives. Activities included forums, interactive workshops, and exhibitions to inspire change and foster innovative thinking.

The award was received on behalf of the university by Professor Dato’ Dr. Hj. Abd Rahim Hj. Mohamad, Head of the MSc in Public Health (Global Health) programme from the Faculty of Medicine, and Ms Kala Raani Chandra Guindan, Programme Coordinator from the Faculty of Nursing.

The Anugerah SMART Mampan@Sepang 2024 is the first initiative of the Sepang Municipal Council to reward and inspire sustained efforts towards achieving SDGs locally. The awards were presented across three categories:

  • Community
  • Government Agencies / Private Sector / NGOs
  • Institutes of Higher Learning / Schools

UoC’s achievement highlights the university’s role as a pioneer in sustainability education and action. UoC has set a benchmark for excellence in integrating SDGs into local development by fostering partnerships, driving impactful programmes, and promoting long-term planning.
