About Our Research Team

The Centre for Research Development (CRD) operates under the leadership of Dr. Ashok Balaraman, Director of Research, supported by a vibrant and dedicated team committed to advancing the University’s research excellence. CRD serves as the central body overseeing research governance, policy regulation, and ethical compliance, ensuring that all research activities align with institutional and national standards.

The Unit provides extensive support to academic and research staff, including the administration of internal research grants, training and capacity-building workshops, publication and citation support, and research incentive schemes. CRD also facilitates collaborative projects, industry partnerships, intellectual property management, and research visibility initiatives through platforms such as Scopus, MyRA, and SDG mapping.

Through these multifaceted functions, CRD plays a pivotal role in nurturing a dynamic, innovative, and impactful research culture across the University.

Meet The Team

Dr. Ashok Kumar Balaraman

Director, Centre for Research Development

Role & Responsibilities
Dr. Ashok leads the strategic direction, governance, and oversight of research at the University of Cyberjaya through the Centre for Research Development (CRD). His key responsibilities include:

  • Formulating and implementing research policies, guidelines, and standards across the university in alignment with its vision, mission, and regulatory requirements.
  • Providing institutional support in research planning, monitoring, evaluation, and performance, including oversight of research key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Ensuring quality assurance, compliance, integrity, and ethics in all research activities, including review of internal research proposals, plagiarism checks, conflicts of interest, and regulatory adherence.
  • Facilitating alignment between faculty / schools / departments and central research strategy; promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration and research culture.
  • Representing the university in external bodies, funding agencies, national/international research networks, and overseeing external research partnerships and collaborations.
  • Overseeing resource allocation, budget planning for research initiatives, grants, infrastructure, and institutional research support.
  • Providing leadership, mentoring, and guidance to RMU staff and coordinating with the university’s senior leadership on research development initiatives.

Nur Liyana Binti Abu Hasan

Executive, Centre for Research Development

Role & Responsibilities

Liyana serves as a key coordinator within CRD, supporting research administration, operational coordination, and institutional processes across grants, ethics, collaborations, and academic engagements. She ensures efficient workflow, compliance, and stakeholder coordination in supporting the university’s research management functions. Her core responsibilities include:

  • Manage research grant processes, including application coordination, review, approval, budgeting, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Coordinate committee and meeting activities, including scheduling, agenda preparation, documentation, and minutes.
  • Support research administration systems and processes, ensuring accurate records, databases, and workflow management.
  • Oversee industry collaboration and grant lifecycle activities from pre-award to post-award and closure.
  • Facilitate academic appointment processes for visiting and adjunct staff, including documentation and tracking.
  • Serve as secretariat support for human ethics review processes, including coordination, documentation, and compliance tracking.

Durkashini A/P Velan

Executive, Centre for Research Development

Role & Responsibilities

Durkashini supports CRD’s research engagement, institutional coordination, and strategic initiatives through event management, stakeholder collaboration, research communication, and operational support. She contributes to strengthening research visibility, outreach, and institutional engagement across the university. Her core responsibilities include:

  • Plan and coordinate research-related events, seminars, and engagement activities with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage event logistics, communications, registrations, and post-event reporting
  • Support research engagement activities, including seminars, workshops, and faculty initiatives.
  • Facilitate industry and community collaboration, including outreach and impact-related programs.
  • Manage research communication materials such as newsletters, announcements, presentations, and internal updates
  • Support development and maintenance of research information systems, dashboards, and digitalization initiatives.
  • Coordinate special research-related projects and institutional initiatives in collaboration with management.

Amalia Sakina Mohd Shahrom

Executive, Centre for Research Development

Role & Responsibilities

Amalia supports CRD’s research performance, strategic planning, and governance functions through research analytics, institutional reporting, and policy coordination. She contributes to data-driven decision-making, institutional benchmarking, and research excellence initiatives that strengthen the university’s research visibility and performance. Her core responsibilities include:

  • Collect, analyze, and maintain research data, including publications, citations, and collaboration records
  • Prepare research performance reports, indicators, and insights to support institutional planning and decision-making
  • Support grant management activities, including identification of funding opportunities and tracking of applications
  • Coordinate preparation and submission of committee and governance papers in compliance with institutional requirements
  • Contribute to the development and review of research policies, guidelines, and related documentation
  • Support institutional research ranking exercises and performance monitoring (e.g., national and international frameworks)
  • Facilitate coordination of research events, including speaker arrangements and related academic engagement activities
  • Prepare research-related reports, presentations, and materials for management and stakeholder use
