Overview

Is Diploma in Cosmetics for You?

The Diploma in Cosmetics programme at UoC is a 2-year and 6 months course designed for students to become professionally trained in knowledge and skills related to the formulation and therapeutic application of cosmetics. The programme's objective is to produce graduates who have a comprehensive understanding of the principles of cosmetic preparation, formulation, evaluation and safety. It also aims to produce graduates who can become entrepreneurs in the cosmetics and beauty industry. This programme is not limited to the application and use of makeup, but rather focuses on the formulation of cosmetic products (lotion, skincare, hair products, oral products, colour cosmetics etc). Students will also be exposed to safety and health guidelines set by domestic and international regulations.

This programme is ideal for students who want to go into the cosmetics industry, or those who want to develop their products, and open up their businesses.

Students will be lectured in small groups depending on the intake and lectures are done in an interactive way. During each class, lecturers will provide engaging questions for students to increase their understanding of the topic. Students will also be supplemented with tutorials to further strengthen their understanding on the fundamental basis of cosmetics. Apart from that, the students will have hands-on experience formulating their cosmetics products such as lipsticks, lip balms, coloured foundations, skin balms, skin lotion, hair shampoos and many more. Students will also undergo short visits to related industry sites including manufacturing sites to witness how the formulation of cosmetic products is being done. In their final semester, the students will undergo industrial training where they will practice and apply their knowledge in real cosmetics industry settings.

Course Description

The Diploma in Cosmetics programme is designed for students to become professionally trained in the field of cosmetics with adequte knowledge and skills related to the formulation and usage of cosmetics. The programmes’ objective is to produce graduates who have comprehensive understanding on the principles of cosmetic preparation, formulation, evaluation and safety.


Course Training and Practical

A variety of practical training will be provided to students. This programme focuses in the formulation of cosmetics products including the skincare products, oral products, hair products and color cosmetics, perfume and aromatherapy products. The students will also be exposed to the therapeutic applications of these products through beauty therapy, facial therapy and scalp and hair therapy courses.

The Experience

Who is teaching?

Students are taught by lecturers with a background in pharmacy, biomedical and cosmetic sciences. Students will also be taught by cosmetics practitioners (aesthetic doctor, medispa entrepreneur, etc.). Some lectures are also conducted by government staff to expose students on important cosmetics regulations.

This full-time programme employs several teachings methodologies such as:

  • Interactive lectures and tutorials
  • Hands-on laboratory sessions on cosmetic formulations
  • Written assessments on the scope of cosmetics
  • Attachment at various beauty spa and cosmetics manufacturers
  • Industrial training at various cosmetics manufacturing sites (~6 months)

Off Campus Learning

To enhance what the students have learnt in the classroom, they will also have to undergo various short attachments and visits to multiple sites such as Beauty Spas, Medi Spas, Wellness Centres and Cosmetic Manufacturing Sites.

Aside from that, students will also undergo about ~6 months of Industrial Training Attachments at various sites as described above.

As an expert in Cosmetics, students will learn what ingredients and materials that are safe in producing cosmetic products that consumers use. Students will be exposed to the evidence-based ingredients in order to produce state-of-the-art cosmetic products that can offer utmost benefits to the consumers. Students will be trained to good standard of cosmetic production and manufacturing.
