Karnival Mesra Ubat 2022 Promotes Awareness on Cardiovascular Health to Kampung Jenderam Hilir
Cyberjaya, 31st May 2022 – As part of their curriculum to give back to the community, Pharmacy students at University of Cyberjaya (UoC) organised its annual public health awareness campaign, Karnival Mesra Ubat (KaMU) at Kampung Jenderam Hilir on the 13th and 14th of May. The campaign was held to educate and create awareness among the residents on cardiovascular health as well as providing insights on cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease.
A total of 128 members of the public participated in the event which featured various activities and programmes including a free health screening by Pharmaniaga’s Squad Operasi Sihat (SOS), Home Medication Reviews (HMR) by pharmacists from Caring Pharmacy and LH Pharmacy assisted by students, Kenali Ubat Anda Interactive Booths, a talk by a representative from the Ministry of Health, a Qigong session by Yang Tai Chi Chuan Association Malaysia, Student Community Outreach booths and more.
“Organising KaMU 2022 was challenging yet satisfying. Unlike online events like we have become accustomed to due to the pandemic, there were many things that were beyond our control which we needed to adapt to. Constant communication and agility among committee members were the reason for our success,” said Hanifah binti Mohd Rofiq, director of KaMU 2022, Year 3, Bachelor of Pharmacy student at the University.
She adds, “It was great to see the residents of Kampung Jenderam Hilir participate attentively during the Cardiovascular Health Talk and counselling session during the health screening. I’m happy that we were able to directly engage and communicate with the community to educate them about cardiovascular health. We were even able to include more participation from children to educate them on cardiovascular health through educational activities and games tailored for their age.”
The event also saw many sponsors including Empro, MS Ally Pharma and Durio PPE, all of whom sponsored RTK test kits as well as face masks. The students also reached out to Yakult who sponsored 750 bottles of Ace Light Yakult at the event aside from providing a talk on gut health and probiotics with a health awareness booth.
Lim Phei Jun, a pharmacist from the Ministry of Health who participated at the event said, “I’m thankful that the Pharmacy students at University of Cyberjaya organised this event to increase the awareness of drug awareness among the public; we enjoyed interacting with the residents of Kampung Jenderam Hilir to educate them about this important cause”.
“The Pharmacy-related programmes at UoC were developed and transformed rapidly to meet the growing demands of the pharmaceutical industry. Our academic team was personally involved in the transformation of the study modules, elements of patient care, community service, leadership as well as research and development for all pharmacy-related programmes at the University to be what it is today: quality programmes that are tailored to benefit the professional pharmaceutical industry and nurturing the passion to care,” said Professor Datin Dr. Rosnani Hashim, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
University of Cyberjaya prides itself for building holistic graduates and focuses on empowering students to build important leadership skills as well as the passion to care for others. Most of its curriculum incorporates aspects of volunteerism and community outreach courses that are hands-on projects led by students themselves.
