Every student-athlete has the invariable task to study and compete, it's like having two daytime job. At Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) “being a student-athlete is both a challenge and an opportunity” to develop one’s leadership and organization skills.

Meet Jaya Prahkashrao a/l Kannanyadu, a 22-year-old, CUCMS student with big dreams to take on the futsal world by storm.

The Bachelor of Occupational Safety & Health student is a professional futsal player for KL City FC. At such a young age, he shows great maturity and commitment to his passion for futsal even as a busy full-time student at the university.

He has played in many national tournaments namely the MNC Futsal Championship, Joma Social League and also international games against Asian countries such as Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei. He has led his team to victory at the Joma Social League by emerging as the overall champions

Jaya has always been active in sports from a young age, taking inspiration from his older brother, Yakish Rao and his favourite football player, Steven Gerald.

This highly decorated lad is no stranger to handling pressure as an athlete. According to Jaya, “The fact is, when under pressure many athletes find that they are not able to produce their best performance. It is a very common experience, and failure -- when the occasion matters most -- is a very unpleasant experience.”

“But pressure doesn’t just occur in sport. It is part of life. I believe the ability to deal with pressure and perform when it matters most is a vital ingredient to an individual’s short- and long-term success” he added. To ease the pressure, he makes sure that he has a weekly schedule mapped out in order for him to divide his time equally between studies and sports.

According to Jaya, he never lets his training effect his class schedules or assignments. He ensures this by paying utmost attention to his lecturers during lessons.

“My classes usually start from 9 am till 5 pm. During this time, I will make full use of my time on campus. Besides that, I will also try to meet my lecturers and classmates as often as I can to get their opinion and advice on assignments. Then, I’m off for my futsal training at IM4U, Puchong, every day from 8.30 pm to 11 pm."

“Actually, I find that being active in sports does help me focus better in my academics because a healthy and energetic body often equals to an active mind,” he added.

Being a student-athlete is a full-time job, it’s not easy. But in the end team, comradery and league victories make

it all worthwhile.

It is the young star’s aspiration to one day play for the National Team.
