From Guarding Gates to Soaring Skies: The Inspiring Journey of Muhammad Ikram bin Mazlan

In an era where traditional career paths often define success, Muhammad Ikram bin Mazlan’s journey offers a refreshing narrative of resilience and courage. At 26, Ikram’s story—from working as a security guard during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic to becoming an accomplished flight attendant—has recently gone viral on social media, inspiring countless individuals, especially the youth, to embrace unconventional paths.

Embracing Unconventional Beginnings

Residing in Sepang and as the eldest of five siblings, Ikram was determined to utilise his time productively after completing his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). He secured a position as a sales assistant at a local mall, demonstrating an early commitment to gaining work experience.​ However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) abruptly terminated his position.

Undeterred by this setback, Ikram faced the economic uncertainties of the pandemic head-on. Faced with scarce employment opportunities during the MCO, he took on the role of a security guard, earning RM60 a day. Reflecting on this challenging period, Ikram shared, “I worked as a security guard during the MCO because I had no income at the time, and job opportunities were scarce. Earning RM60 a day was better than having no income.”

While many of his peers sought more prestigious temporary roles, Ikram’s choice to undertake a job often overlooked by his peers underlines his determination and persistence. Despite admitting initial difficulties adjusting to the responsibilities of a security guard, he persevered in this role for a year before resuming his studies.​

His journey imparts a powerful lesson: no role is insignificant if it fosters honest effort and personal growth. His willingness to embrace roles irrespective of societal perceptions reflects his unyielding spirit and determination.

Academic Pursuits at University of Cyberjaya (UoC)

Ikram’s aspiration for growth led him to the University of Cyberjaya, where he pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. The university’s vibrant environment and diverse community were pivotal in his development. “The culture at UoC and interactions with international students helped me improve my English-speaking skills. I’m very grateful I chose UoC for my studies,” Ikram noted.

The nurturing atmosphere at UoC, aligned with its ethos of “Unleashing Changemakers,” equipped Ikram with essential skills, significantly enhancing his proficiency in communication—an invaluable asset in his present career. Transitioning from ground security to the skies, Ikram’s journey to becoming a flight attendant was fuelled by his improved language proficiency and interpersonal skills. He credits specific courses at UoC for bolstering his confidence, stating, “The English course has helped me to improve speaking in English confidently, which helped my current job as cabin crew.”

Ikram’s story, which gained widespread attention on TikTok, serves as a beacon of hope and motivation. He expressed his feelings about the viral recognition: “I feel proud and happy because I can inspire many people.”

His journey embodies the essence of resilience and the belief that every experience, regardless of societal perceptions, contributes to personal growth. To those hesitant about pursuing unconventional roles, Ikram offers profound advice: “No matter how difficult it is to get the job we dream of, it’s okay to work elsewhere first, even as a cleaner or security guard. All jobs are good as long as the income is halal.”
