30 April 2016 - CUCMS believes that education should be enhanced with practical experience. And so over 140 medical students and 40 students from the Diploma in Paramedical Science and Medical Assistant gathered for a 5-day intensive training with the Malaysian Armed Forces. The Disaster Relief and Medicine (DRM) and Personal Professional Development (PPD) programme aimed to enhance the participants’ physical and mental strength, create team spirit and cohesion, develop survival skills and expose students to military medicine.
The programme was held from 26 – 30 April 2016 at the Armed Forces’ 94 – Terendak Hospital which is a health facility based in a military camp. It saw 16 CUCMS facilitators and 15 military trainers deliver a challenging and stimulating experience to the students. One of the activities included a simulation of a fire-explosion at a gas refinery and students were tasked with managing the evacuation and relief operations.
Mohd Fairus Nikmat, an executive at the Centre for DRM shared this was the first time the DRM and PPD programme was integrated and delivered together and many participants found it a challenge but appreciated the invaluable experience gained. The Centre for DRM is tasked with organizing and delivering the various disaster management, and emergency medical programmes at CUCMS and it remains one of the few Malaysian universities to do so.
