University of Cyberjaya Holds Honorary & Postgraduate Conferment Ceremony

Cyberjaya, 18th December 2021 – The University of Cyberjaya awarded 5 renowned individuals for their exceptional contributions to the public good at its Honorary & Postgraduate Conferment Ceremony at its campus today. These honorary doctorate degrees are the highest form of recognition offered by the University of Cyberjaya to persons of extraordinary distinction.

The special convocation ceremony was held to award Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato’ Sri SA. Vigneswaran, Yang Berbahagia Yang Berbahagia Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli bin Abdul Razak, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Frieda binti Dato’ Mohd Pilus and Yang Berbahagia Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd Razak.

Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai is the Executive Chairman and Founder of Top Glove Corporation Bhd, the world’s largest manufacturer of gloves with about 26% of the global market share. Tan Sri Dr. Lim’s significant contribution to the development of the country’s economy earned him the University’s Honorary Doctorate in Management.

 

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri SA. Vigneswaran is the chairman of the board of trustees of AIMST University. He was formerly appointed as the President of the Malaysian the Senate. Aside from his contributions to the Malaysian government, he is also the founder of the non-governmental organisation, Malaysian Indian Youth Development Foundation (MIYDF), a national youth caucus for Indians with 75,000 members. For his work in community engagement, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri SA. Vigneswaran received the Honorary Doctorate of Social Science award.

 

Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli bin Abdul Razak is the Rector of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He has received the 2017 Asia HRD Contribution to Society Award as recognition for his contribution to people’s development in the academic world. He was also an academician at USM, where he became Vice Chancellor from 2000 to 2011. Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli received the Honorary Doctor of Leadership in Education award.

 

Dato’ Freida binti Dato’ Mohd Pilus is the founder of Cempaka Education Group. She pioneered private school education and has been instrumental in its transformation into one of the fastest-growing economic sectors of the Malaysian service industry today. For her contributions, Dato’ Freida received the Honorary Professor award.

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd Razak is the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cyberjaya and has received seven Gold Awards in research. Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd Razak played a pivotal role in leading the University of Cyberjaya from a humble university college to its elevation in 2019 to a full university. The University of Cyberjaya is today regarded a leading health science university thanks to Dato’ Dr. Mohamad’s tireless efforts and emphatic leadership and is thus awarded the Professor Emeritus title during the ceremony.

Pro-chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. R. Palan acknowledged the important contributions done by the recipients during his speech. “Today’s Conferment Ceremony aims to highlight the distinguished contributions of these luminaries as part of our continuing journey towards recognising outstanding role models. They have made significant, pioneering, and revolutionary contributions in their areas of expertise. They inspire our graduates with their lifetime work and bring honour and distinction to the University’s pursuit of excellence. The University of Cyberjaya is indeed honoured to have them here with us.”

In addition, the University also awarded postgraduate certificates to students from the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021. The University of Cyberjaya’s postgraduate programmes prides itself in its research excellence, collaborative networks, grant schemes and international reputation.

Our focus on research is evident by our recent research award which has successfully obtained the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) for what could potentially be ground-breaking work in cancer treatment drugs. Asst. Prof. Dr. Liew Kai Bin, Head of the Pharmaceutical Technology and Industry Department secured the grant for the research titled “Development of a Luteolin Loaded Folate Decorated Vitamin E TPGS-Poloxamer Long Circulating Micelle for Multi Drug Resistant Breast Cancer Smart Targeting”.

The University recognises that research and academia remain to be a pivotal force in today’s fast-moving and challenging society. Programmes such as Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Management) are designed to be intellectually challenging and focuses on being analytic and innovative.

Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Science graduate, Dr. Syeda Humayra said: “Overall, it has been a wonderful 3.5 years of learning experience as I was directly promoted from Masters to PhD (fast-track) programme and evolved from a student who knew nothing about research to a dedicated cardiovascular researcher. If you have a genuine passion towards research and you are self-driven, then this is the ideal programme and institution for you.”

The University’s international lecturer, Avanish Shukla who aimed to upskill himself was also among the list graduates at the ceremony. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduate said, “The staff are very supportive and have always tried to improve the student learning experience. Along with that we have a post graduate peer support group run by students online who are always there for anyone who is looking for any support. The course itself is also well-structured with lecturers and supervisors who provide all kinds of learning resources to help us consolidate knowledge in different ways. They are always happy to help with clarifying any information and they genuinely want to help us do well – it is nice to feel that they care!”
