The conference also saw 22 oral research presentation and 40 poster presentation by participants from leading public and private universities including young researchers from CUCMS, Taylor’s University, MAHSA University, AIMST University, University Putra Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia, Chiang Mai University and Athlone Institute of Technology Ireland among others.
28th May 2016, Cyberjaya – Close to 200 pharmacy students and young researchers gathered over the weekend at the Third Pharmaceutical Research Conference organised by Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences at its Cyberjaya Campus. In keeping with the theme for 2016, Quenching the Inquisitive Minds: Diversity Beyond Borders, this year’s conference was organised in collaboration with 3 international partners namely Chiang Mai University (CMU) of Thailand, Gadjah Mada University (GMU) of Indonesia and Sekolah Tinggi Farmasi Bandung (STFB) of Indonesia. The conference was supported by the Chemical Company of Malaysia (CCM), PharmaNiaga and other leading pharmaceutical companies.
The event featured a slate of international and local speakers who are leaders in their field including Prof. Subagus Wahyuono, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia, Assoc. Prof. Pimporn Leelapornpisid, Vice Head of Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Dr. Patonah, Head of Department of Pharmacology at Sekolah Tinggi Farmasi Bandung in Indonesia.
The conference also saw 22 oral research presentation and 40 poster presentation by participants from leading public and private universities including young researchers from CUCMS, Taylor’s University, MAHSA University, AIMST University, University Putra Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia, Chiang Mai University and Athlone Institute of Technology Ireland among others. Over 30 participants were from Thailand and 11 were from Indonesia. The research presentations were in the areas of pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, the industry and clinical practice.
Among the research topics presented at the plenary session was Prof. Subagus Wahyuono’s talk on drug discovery from various sources including marine and forestry. Prof. Subagus’ work on natural pharmaceutical compounds has won him awards from USA and Japan. He highlighted the challenges faced in extracting these compounds but stated his belief that the field has much to offer in the near future as more and more knowledge is uncovered.
Assoc. Prof. Pimporn Leelapornpisid on the other hand shared some of the recent advancements in the area of nutraceutical and cosmeceutical research. This included products such as nutrients, dietary supplements and herbal products and cosmetic products with biologically active ingredients believed to have medical benefits.
Y.Bhg Dato’ Dr. R. Palan, Pro-Chancellor of CUCMS in his official opening address praised the commitment of students and graduates to the field of research. “I strongly believe that research progress in pharmacy is aimed towards safeguarding the nation’s healthcare and this event is a step in the right direction”. He further added that events such as PRC 2016 is significant as it provides an opportunity for students, graduates, educators, scholars and researches to engage each other and collaborate on academic activities.
The conference is just one aspect of larger efforts by CUCMS to create a network of regional and international collaborative partners. The university has recently signed several Memorandum of Understanding with Chiang Mai University, Gadjah Mada University and Sekolah Tinggi Farmasi Bandung to organize and promote joint academic and research activities between the institutions. CUCMS has long been active in expanding its network of partners as it believe that co-operation and synergy is important to advance research as it allows for institutions to leverage of one another’s expertise.
“Research continues to be a core component of what we do here at CUCMS. It’s something we inculcate on all our graduates as it is imperative if one is to advance in their field”, added Prof. Dr. Rosnani Hashim, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at CUCMS. “In fact it’s our partnership with the University of Southern California that enabled us to develop our postgraduate degrees in pharmacy. In Malaysia, CUCMS remains the only university to offer an approved and recognized Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D) and the only private institute of offer a Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacy.
The CUCMS Faculty of Pharmacy is one of two founding faculties of the university. It has been delivering the fully accredited Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) degree for over a decade. It has seen 6 cohort of its students graduate and enter the ever expanding healthcare industry. The SETARA Tier 5 (Excellent) - rated institution currently has over 3500 students in more than 20 programmes ranging from degree to postgraduate research courses in areas such as medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, psychology, homeopathic medical sciences, physiotherapy, occupational safety and health, biomedical engineering technology, paramedical sciences and more.
