Isaac Danker from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme and the recipient of this year’s Chancellor’s Award said, “I look upon this award as a achievement which required learning form countless mistakes and by having a high sense perseverance to face the challenges. This success would be impossible without everyone’s contribution around me.”
Shah Alam, 1st November 2017 – Cyberjaya University College, today, celebrated over 860 of its graduates who had successfully completed their tertiary education at its 8th Convocation Ceremony. Held at Setia City Convention Centre, Setia Alam, Selangor, the auspicious occasion was officiated by the Chairman of the Board of Governors, YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ridzwan Abu Bakar.
A series of awards were presented to prominent individuals including the conferment of the Honorary Doctorate in the field of Safety and Health (Occupational Safety and Health Management) presented to YBhg Dato’ Dr Mohammed Azman, Chief Executive Officer of the Social Security Organization (SOCSO) Malaysia to recognize and appreciate his efforts in promoting workplace safety and worker’s welfare in Malaysia.
A visionary and one who is farsighted, Dato’ Dr. Mohammed Azman never fails to bring new ideas in enhancing social protection in Malaysia. He has been chosen as the Lead Person in the Business Process Reengineering Project of SOCSO and is also involved directly in the establishment of SOCSO’s Rehabilitation Centre which has been operational since 1st October 2014. Prevention is also one of Dr. Azman’s main vision for dynamic social security. One of his greatest achievement in this field is the prevention of lifestyle diseases amongst Malaysian workers. He is responsible for implementing the SOCSO Health Screening Programme in 2013. Through his leadership, over 3000 panel clinics, pathological laboratories and mammogram centers were registered; and over 2 million health screening vouchers were circulated in a span of 3 months. Through this programme, hundreds of thousands of Malaysian workers were able to undergo a proper health screening.
His capability and contribution in the field of social security has not only been recognized in Malaysia but also on the International front as he has also been elected as the Head of Health and Function of Rehab International. Dato’ Dr. Mohammed Azman is a member of the Malaysian Society of Safety and Health, Society of Occupational and Environmental Medicine of the MMA, Academy of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, Malaysian Society of Occupational Health Physician and the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health.
Cyberjaya University College had also awarded the title of “Emeritus Professor” to Professor Dr. Zainudin Merican bin Md. Hashim Merican. The highly influential academician has been acknowledged for his contributions to the field of research as well as being an active member of the Malaysian Treasurers’ Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and an Honorary Auditor of the Malaysian Society for Physiology and Pharmacology during the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Also receiving the award of Honorary Professor at the convocation was Y.Bhg Brigadier General Dato’ Dr A Halim Bin Hj Basari a highly qualified Pharmacist in the Malaysian Armed Forces. Brigadier General Dato’ Dr A Halim was honored for his significant contributions to the nation and to the Malaysian Armed Forces. Brigadier General Dato’ Dr A Halim’s dedication, sense of patriotism and professionalism provides a unique and motivating example for many young graduates of today.
This year’s graduating class is the 8th cohort for the 12-year-old University and signifies yet another milestone in Cyberjaya University College’s successful history. The university was also proud to present the first cohort of graduates from it’s Postgraduate Diploma in Addiction Science (PgDAS) programme under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. This internationally recognized programme was developed in collaboration with Colombo Plan International Centre for Credentialing and Education of Addiction Professionals (ICCE) as part of a global effort to better manage drug abuses in the developing nations. Cyberjaya University College is the only university to offer this programme in South East Asia.
Among the 867 graduates were 141 graduates of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), 76 graduates of the Bachelor of Pharmacy, 42 graduates of the Bachelor of Occupational Safety & Health (Hons), 15 graduates of the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medical Science (Hons) and 568 graduates of various undergraduates programmes in allied health science. Also receiving their scrolls at the ceremony were the pioneer batch of 11 graduates from the Postgraduate Diploma in Addiction Sciences and another 14 graduates from other postgraduate programmes.
Isaac Danker from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme was selected by the University Senate as the recipient of this year’s Chancellor’s Award, the highest Academic Award granted to a student. He expressed his delight and gratitude to Cyberjaya UC and all those who were with him in the celebration of his achievement. When met at the sidelines of the ceremony, Isaac said “I look upon this award as an achievement which required learning form countless mistakes and by having a high sense perseverance to face the challenges. This success would be impossible without everyone’s contribution around me.”
In addition to a stellar academic performance, Isaac Danker is also known for his contributions to promoting professionalism among pharmacy students. Isaac was formerly the national President for the Malaysian Pharmacy Students' Association (MyPSA) which represents hundreds of Pharmacy students from various Malaysian universities. Despite his many achievements, Isaac remains a humble young man who remains dedicated to lifelong learning. “Positive or negative, every situation has shaped me to become I am today. I am still learning and will continue to do so for the rest of my life”, said Issac.
Another student who was rewarded for her achievements at the ceremony was Rasathi Ellangovan, a graduate of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons). Rasathi was awarded the President’s Award for her achievements in extracurricular activities, academic excellence, integrity and leadership. Rasathi was pleasantly surprised when she found out that she was the recipient of the President’s Award, “I definitely did not expect this as I always believed others might be better” she said. Rasathi believes that one should always find a way to motivate one’s self, “I think I am a self-motivated person and I have always wanted to find ways to keep improving my skills”, she added.
Reflecting the university’s focus on developing industry-relevant skills, two special awards were sponsored by members of the industry. Nurul Sofiyah Md Shater of the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medical Science (Hons) programme was awarded a Gold Medal by the Homeopathic Medical Council of Malaysia while Ahmad Fairuz Afif Aziz from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) was selected for the Pharmaniaga Industry Excellence Award. Pharmaniaga, an International pharmaceutical firm remains a strong industry partner to Cyberjaya University College.
Another 16 graduates were also feted for the various Dean’s Award and Faculty-Industry Awards. Cyberjaya University College’s President, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd Razak was present in person to present the various awards to each graduate.
Among the 867 graduates were 141 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students, 76 B. Pharmacy students and 25 postgraduate students. Cyberjaya University College expressed its heartiest congratulations to all graduates as they embark on a new journey in pursuing the career of their dreams.
