The Faculty of Creative Arts and Design (FCAD) recently conducted a Smartphone Photography and Canva Design training programme under the SCOPE initiative (Second Chances & Opportunities for People to Excel). Delivered in collaboration with HRD Corp and the Malaysian Prison Department, the programme engaged participants currently undergoing rehabilitation, equipping them with creative and digital skills to support reintegration, employability, and self-expression.

During the programme, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of visual communication. They explored basic composition techniques, learning how balance, contrast, and perspective shape the impact of an image. Through guided exercises, they experimented with logo design, focusing on how symbols, typography, and colour can convey identity and purpose. Sessions on marketing techniques introduced them to the essentials of branding and storytelling in design, incorporating practical activities that utilised Canva as an accessible tool for creating posters, social media graphics, and promotional content. Together, these elements provided participants with a foundation in creative thinking and design that is transferable to both personal expression and potential future entrepreneurial ventures.

As part of SCOPE’s broader mission, the programme contributed to reducing stigma, strengthening acceptance, and supporting reintegration by equipping participants with employable skills. It also aligned with national efforts to reduce recidivism, promote social responsibility, and empower individuals to make positive contributions to their communities.

This initiative reflected the University of Cyberjaya’s belief in education as a transformative force, championing talent, inclusivity, and equal opportunity, regardless of background or circumstance.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the participants for their courage, openness, and creativity. Their commitment to learning serves as a powerful reminder that growth, resilience, and excellence remain possible at every stage of life.
