Cyberjaya, 20th October 2017 - Cyberjaya University College was pleased to host a visit from the United States of America’s Department of State, represented by Ms. Maria Skirk, Foreign Affairs Officer at the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), U.S.A. Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Shaharudin, the university’s Deputy President of Academic & International Affairs was on hand to receive Ms. Skirk.

Ms. Maria Skirk was updated on the success of the programme by the Programme Director, Professor Dr Rosnah Binti Ismail and Programme Coordinator, Dr Zall Kepli.

The visit allowed the U.S. Department of State to gain a better understanding and update on the university’s Post-graduate Diploma in Addiction Science. The 1-year programme run by the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences is an internationally recognized programme that was developed in collaboration with Colombo Plan International Centre for Credentialing and Education of Addiction Professionals (ICCE). It is part of a global effort to better manage the drug abuses in the developing nations. The US Department of State has been a strong supporter on this global effort through its collaborations with the Colombo Plan Secretariat.

The Colombo Plan, through its world-wide initiative, has been sponsoring 2 cohorts of International students who are currently undertaking the programme at Cyberjaya University College. The university is one of the only 2 universities in the world in which the programme has been recognized by the Colombo Plan as it incorporates the approved curriculum and is a pathway to obtaining the ICCE credentials as an addiction specialist.

Ms. Maria Skirk was updated on the success of the programme by the Programme Director, Professor Dr Rosnah Binti Ismail and Programme Coordinator, Dr Zall Kepli. Also on hand was Dr. Mohd Fairuz, Dean of Cyberjaya University College’s Faculty of Allied Sciences.

Professor Dr Rosnah was proud to share the successes and progress of the 1st cohort of students in the programme. most of whom are now undergoing the clinical training in various government and semi-government facilities in Malaysia. “The training prepares them for professional certification by providing the latest information about Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and treatment and facilitating hands-on activities to develop skills and confidence in the workforce,” quoted Professor Dr Rosnah.

The Addiction Science field in Malaysia has developed progressive ways for practitioners to manage and provide suitable treatments for patients suffering from addiction. “The curriculum provides opportunities to encourage students to share their relevant experiences and knowledge through their education, work experiences to connect them with the curriculum content. This process facilitates increased partnerships and collaborations when the students return to their home countries”, Professor Dr Rosnah added.

There are over 11 international students from Bhutan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and more. Cyberjaya University College is proud to be given the opportunity to contribute to a global effort to curb the spread of drug abuse and will continue to play its part.
