University of Cyberjaya Students Participate in Parliament Affairs

Cyberjaya, 15th October 2020 – Pharmacy students of the University of Cyberjaya are trained to be all-rounded graduates from sport activities to community outreach programmes and even parliament events. Just recently, Hanifah Binti Mohd Rofiq and Nurhaziqah binti Izan, a student and alumni from the Faculty of Pharmacy participated in Akademi Parlimen Digital and the Malaysia Youth Leaders’ Assembly (MYLA) 2020 respectively.

Hanifah who is also a swimmer and debater for the faculty is in her second year of studies and is great at balancing her time between her classes and extracurricular activities. Hanifah registered to join Akademi Parlimen Digital organised by UNDI18, a movement to reduce the minimum voting age in Malaysia from 21 to 18 years old.

The webinar series was meant to improve participants’ understanding of the youth political climate, understand how to effectively engage with stakeholders and learn how to speak in a more effective manner. The webinar discussed a number of national and international issues, more specifically about the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has affected the society.

Hanifah said: “As soon as I saw the objectives of the programme, I knew right then that this programme could help prepare me if I were to join Parlimen Digital as a Member of the Parliament next year. That further encouraged me to sign up for the digital event.”

“The experience was very inspiring. We had sessions where the organiser would randomly divide us into groups of five to six people, and we had to come up with analysis and solutions on existing issues. I thought discussing and brainstorming with strangers digitally was going to be a challenge but to my surprise, it went by very smoothly as we manage to communicate our ideas without a hitch.”

We discussed on how to structure policies that could strengthen public knowledge regarding health, protect the most vulnerable and more. Discussing these issues made me realise that I’ve been living in a privileged bubble. We need to do better in terms of social equality and equity,” she added.

Another proud product from the Faculty of Pharmacy is the recently graduated Nurhaziqah, Bachelor of Pharmacy. Nurhaziqah is now undergoing her Provisionally Registered Pharmacist (PRP) at Duopharma Biotech Berhad and is also the Editorial and Translation Subcommittee of the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation Asia Pacific Regional Office (IPSF APRO) 2020/2021.

She recently participated in the Malaysian Youth Leaders’ Assembly (MYLA) 2020 organised by the Youth Parliament of MalaysiaNurhaziqah said: “MYLA 2020 is a platform for youth leaders to showcase solutions and engage with decision-makers on defining national issues, redefining and refining their future challenges. The assembly brought together youths from different fields and backgrounds with a common interest and love for Malaysia.”

Among the recommendations proposed to address the health crises in Malaysia especially on policy regarding COVID-19 include curating stimulus packages to strengthen the health sector while mitigating the impact on economies and labour markets through the provision of financial relief, implementing employment retention measures and providing financial or tax reliefs for enterprises and providing health access for all workers while expanding access to paid leave.

The University of Cyberjaya aspires to produce holistic and market-ready graduates that can dabble in influencing government decisions for the benefit of serving the society.
