CUCMS & PMM Provide Safety Training for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Cyberjaya, 15th February 2017 – EXCELL, the professional and continuing education arm of Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences today signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Malaysians Mountaineering Federation (PMM) to offer specialized medical first responder training for outdoor and mountain climbing professionals. This initiative aims to prepare the outdoor organiser and enthusiasts with an emergency response and first aid training in a variety of outdoor and extreme conditions.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abdul Razak, President of CUCMS and Tuan Haji Jamaluddin Bin Mohamed Yusuff, President of PMM. The signing which took place at the university’s Cyberjaya Campus was witnessed by Mr. Kalaiarasu Malayandi, Bursar of CUCMS and Mohd Zaidi Kamaruddin, Secretary of PMM.

Mountain climbing as a recreational activity has seen an increased support in Malaysia in recent years. PMM estimates there are almost 100,000 hiking and climbing enthusiast in Malaysia. The Federation has been an active promoter on safety issues having contributed significant resources in the training of climbers, trainers, and other enthusiasts. They have formalized many of the climbing and safety procedure in Malaysian as part of their objective to make climbing and mountaineering a safe, healthy and family oriented hobby. One of their many great achievements was the first ever successful Malaysian climb to Mount Everest in 1997.

“While mountaineering is often considered by many to be a dangerous sport, like many other outdoor activities it can be a very enjoyable experience if one were to follow well laid out rules and make the necessary preparations”, said Tuan haji Jamaluddin Bin Mohamed Yusuff, President of PMM.

“As part of our commitment to safety, we are proud to partner Cyberjaya University College in developing this unique programme that will meet the specific needs of any outdoor sport enthusiast and professionals”, he further added.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abdul Razak said, “The programme focuses more on the safety aspect as the outdoor enthusiasts will need a set of skills that will help them to overcome emergency or medical challenges during their adventure. With this partnership we believe that more aspects will be covered by both parties in giving a clearer and more precise medical training courses to the participants”.

Under this partnership Cyberjaya University College, a top-tier healthcare university, will develop and provide a specialized training programme for Mountain-Outdoor Medical First Responders that will prepare participants to administer emergency response and first aid in a variety of outdoor and extreme conditions.

The core of the 3-days programme will adhere to the American Heart Association’s recommended curriculum thus earning its participants an AHA Certification which is internationally recognized and valued. The university is an AHA-certified training centre. Participants will also be trained on the highly technical Roping Rescue methods including, usage of classic mountaineering equipment’s, knots and hitches, belaying, and ascending and descending techniques that will carry SEACF Level 1 and the PMM High Rope Level 1 Certifications.

Safety is vital for all climbers in which every mountain require a different set of skills to enable them to reach the peak and return in harmless condition. The recent case was the 20-year-old young man went missing on Broga Hill at Semenyih for a week. Search & rescue team and Mountain Search and Rescue members found him at the “Puncak 3” of Broga Hill at 11.45am.

‘When we do outdoor activities, we will ensure that everything will run smooth as planned. However, things likely to be rough for some which the causes could be from various aspects. That is why we want to stress that we need certified medical knowledge and response when dealing with challenges specially in an outdoor or extreme environment that we are not familiar with. This collaboration will help us to do a knowledge transfer with our participants and make sure that they are well-equipped with the information required’, said Tuan Haji Jamaluddin Bin Mohamed Yusuff.
